Village Action in South India (part 2)

Savings Scheme

The aim with both these methods is to gradually and supportively introduce them into local government schools, thus benefiting a wider range of children. Funding is also going to the Life Education Centre which offers training to young women. The aim is to give training in occupational skills, and also to promote social awareness and self confidence.

Lesson

Village Action has managed to attract European Union funding for these projects. This is only available if it can be balanced by equivalent finance from other sources. Consequently what we send (modest as it is) is effectively doubled as it can be matched by an equal amount from the EU allocation. It also means that the work is scrutinised and regular reports and accounts submitted. Currently Village Action is unable to realise all the EU would be willing to donate if grants were matched, so what we have to offer is particularly appreciated.

Lesson

The Auroville Community welcomes overseas guests and one or two of our members have taken the opportunity to visit, and have been impressed by the grassroots activities of Village Action and the enthusiastic and dedicated work which is being undertaken in the educational projects mentioned above. We are satisfied that our donations are being used effectively and that the educational opportunities offered to the young will have beneficial effects for the wider community.
