Philip Jones has been Chair of BOWL since April 2004. He has also masterminded several quiz nights – the last in November 2004. Barnes Green Social Centre was packed to capacity, the questions challenging, supper much appreciated and the total profit was £480

Barnes Fair in July is always a great event. The sun shone, crowds came and as usual our stall was crammed to capacity with things to sell. Bric-a-brac found new homes and lots of children were delighted with the items they got out of our bran tub. Antony Ellman’s honey proved as popular as ever. Even though he himself was on his way to China the St Margaret’s Elastic Jazz Band (see this link), in which he plays, generously gave us £150 they had earned by playing at the Fair. The MacDermotts provided a superb lunch in the shade of the apple trees in their garden and their guests donated a further £137 to add to the day’s brilliant total of £886.

We replaced our March meeting in 2005 with a take-away curry supper at Mary Holmes’s when we were able to say ‘thank you’ to Charles Ford for his valuable work creating this website. We are delighted that Jenny Atton is happy to take on responsibility for BOWL’s website.
Thanks to Sally a group of BOWL members had a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster and a chance to sit on those padded leather seats we see on TV and buy House of Commons marmalade. All very enjoyable.

BOWL is not a political group but of course we very much want a government that takes the problems of development and poverty reduction seriously. Jenny Tonge, the recently retired MP for Richmond Park, was the Liberal Democrat spokesperson on development, travelled widely in the developing world, and made an effective contribution on these issues in the House of Commons and in the media. We wish her well and hope she has a bit of time to relax before starting work as a member of the House of Lords.
Good wishes too to Susan Kramer, the new MP for Richmond Park, who spoke on
development issues at a pre-election rally in April 2005. In particular she
emphasised the importance of Fairtrade.
