Support for Survival

At BOWL we believe all the money we raise should be used for good causes, not
left sitting in the bank. We’ve recently sent money to Survival International,
a worldwide organisation supporting tribal people. The money we sent went mainly
to help the Kalahari Bushmen in their struggle for justice.
Since 1997 the government of Botswana has been forcibly moving the Kalahari
Bushmen from land they have occupied for countless generations. For all of us
our homes are centrally important to our lives. For the Bushmen their homes
and their land are everything. Living on their ancestral land the Kalahari Bushmen
are self-sufficient. The alternative is eking out a wretched existence in an
impoverished reserve.
Moving out the Bushmen has enabled the Botswana government to open up their
land for companies like De Beers to explore for diamonds.
The Bushmen are determined to regain their land and have challenged the Botswana
government in the courts. Survival International is helping by raising awareness
of their case and also providing money to fund some of their legal expenses.
BOWL initially sent £500 to Survival – for the Kalahari and a campaign
on land rights by tribal people in northern Brazil. After hearing one of the
leaders of the Kalahari campaign speak in London we sent a further £500
to help with legal costs as the Bushmen pursue their claim. More on www.survival-international.org
